ASSET...

Asperger Syndrome Support and Enablement Team

ASSET is an outreach service for adults with Asperger syndrome which aims to enable individuals to live independently within the community. Support packages are tailored to individual need and choice and are based on good practice approaches to ASD .

We offer a range of services:

• Tenancy Support. Support is given to individuals to live in their own properties and to maintain a stable and safe environment. This type of support is called ‘Floating Support’ and is short term for up to two years. This service is offered through Supporting People, a government initiative seeking to improve the quality of life of vulnerable people. This service currently operates in Birmingham and Walsall .

• Independent Living Skills. Individually tailored support packages can be offered to individuals with where specific needs have been identified. This service is dependent upon achieving funding, for example through a social worker or health practitioner.

• Social Groups. Individuals who are interested in trying new activities and meeting others with Asperger syndrome can join a social group. Members take it in turns to select activities and this is supported by two autism.west midlands staff. Unfortunately due to demand places are currently limited but we can offer a registration assessment and include people on our waiting list.

• Discussion Groups. Individuals who are interested in talking about Asperger syndrome and many different topics about life in general with others with the same condition can join a discussion group. These take place once a month during the evening and include the opportunity to have a meal with the rest of the group afterwards. We currently have groups in Birmingham , Solihull , Worcestershire and Sandwell. Unfortunately due to demand places on some groups are limited but we can offer a registration assessment and include people on our waiting list.

• Student Support. Students within higher education can get support during their studies. Currently we are working with the University of Birmingham and UCE. Funding is through the Disabled Students Allowance and individuals need to make themselves known to the Student Support Service within the University.

We can also offer:

• Assessments

• Information and guidance, including on Disability Living Allowance Benefit

• Liaison with other agencies
