Tom's Story

Tom (29) has Asperger Syndrome and mild learning disabilities. Shared support placements from generic care providers had been unsuccessful. When he came to Autism West Midlands for support he was living in respite care.

We discovered that sensory issues were at the root of his challenges in a shared environment. The sounds of people living above and below him were causing extreme anxiety, and were overwhelming. We identified a suitable shared property, set up a support structure and Tom moved in with three other young men.

There was an immediate positive impact on his behavior. His anxiety levels dropped and he now feels far more secure. He is developing skills in budgeting successfully and regularly visits his family. With support, he has begun attending a college cookery course.
