► Consultancy

At Autism West Midlands we are committed to providing high quality training to meet the needs of staff working with individuals on the autism spectrum of all ages and abilities. However, we recognise that training alone does not hold all the solutions. Staff are enthusiastic about what they have learned on the day and are keen to implement their learning but all too often the information, ideas and strategies are forgotten when staff go back into their settings and work takes over again.

We therefore offer an ongoing support and consultancy service for organisations that have received our training because we believe that staff need to be able to access some guidance and be reminded of the strategies they learned on the training day when they encounter difficult situations in the workplace while supporting individuals on the spectrum. For example, they may need coaching in using positive behaviour support techniques.

Peer support and consultancy

As autism specialists we pride ourselves on being able to provide specific strategies for professionals working alongside people on the spectrum. In order to impart this knowledge our specialists can come into your workplace and give peer support sessions to your staff. The aim of peer support is to give practical advice in the workplace about how to make reasonable adjustments to your service, and to your staff’s behaviour towards and communication with clients on the autism spectrum. Both verbal and written reports will be produced following the consultancy session.

Our specialists will use a variety of techniques including:

• Observation
They will observe a staff member/staff members interacting with a person on the autism spectrum.

• Environmental appraisal
They will conduct an evaluation of the working environment using their knowledge and experience of autism.

• Evaluation of processes and procedures
Our specialists will evaluate all policies and procedures relating to how staff members communicate with and behave towards people with autism.
