Sometimes adults with autism find it difficult to make new friends. Finding social situations difficult can limit opportunities for exploring the community and interests. Creating space for friendship, fun, sharing, challenges and personal development is what befriending is all about. Befriending can open up a range of activities and lead to increased self-esteem and self-confidence. It can reduce isolation and increase independence.
Our befrienders are volunteers who give their time to support adults with autism. They will spend time doing activities both people enjoy. This could be as simple as drinking coffee together in the coffee shop, shopping, going swimming, attending cultural events or taking part in hobbies or special interests of the person with autism.
Befriending activities take place in groups and on an individual basis. Each befriender will have training so they will understand how autism can affect people.
We are looking for volunteers of any age who have the ability to travel within Walsall. No experience is necessary as training will be provided.
