Understanding & managing eating issues on the Autism Spectrum – West Bromwich

24th September 2018 at 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Understanding & managing eating issues on the Autism Spectrum.

A free course for parents/carers in Sandwell of a child with autism who is experiencing problems with food & diet.

Course overview

Feeding and eating problems are common in individuals with autism. Difficulties such as only eating a very few foods, going long periods of time without eating or over eating and Pica (eating non-foods) can be difficult to understand and manage with parents and carers often reporting feelings of anxiety, frustration and blame.

Using knowledge from academic and clinical fields of typical feeding development and childhood feeding disorders, this three hour workshop will explain the common patterns of eating in autism. Using the new diagnosis of

‘Avoidant and Restrictive Food Intake Disorder’ (DSM IV, 2013) the first half of the workshop will discuss how eating issues in autism relate to the characteristics of the condition itself. The second half will concentrate on evidence and practice-based strategies for intervention.

This course is written and presented by Dr Elizabeth Shea from Birmingham Food Refusal Services. She has almost two decades of experience in working with children, adolescents and adults with limited diets and specialises in this eating pattern in individuals on the autism spectrum.

She has appeared on Television twice, has co-authored a book on this pattern of eating and written articles and filmed interviews on eating for both the National Autistic Society and Scottish Autism.
