Autism West Midlands provide training for both professionals and parents. Please see below for more information on the courses we offer.

 

Training for Professionals - Bespoke training at your venue

Our specialist autism training is aimed at professionals who want to explore the autism spectrum and gain more knowledge on specific subjects around autism. We train anybody from GPs, to the police, care providers as well as organisations aiming to become more autism-friendly.  Our training is delivered directly at your venue and can be provided as a full- or half-day course. We also offer hourly rates. 

Our training programme is a cost-effective introduction to autism, giving key strategies for you and your staff. Full training materials are provided. 

Our famous Autism Awareness training has been specially adapted to the new requirements under the Autism Act and Statutory Guidance. It is a sharply-focused seminar, tailored to your needs.

Our training will help you:
  • Recognise that someone has autism
  • Understand what autism means
  • Recognise how people with autism view the world and process information
  • Understand how to minimise the anxiety of the person with autism
  • Learn practical, specific strategies to use in dealing with someone with autism, at work or elsewhere

Course aims:

To explore the autism spectrum and cover the following areas:

  • Information: An introduction to autism.
  • Impact: Learn how to recognise that someone has autism. Understand how a person with autism sees the world, and how this might affect you in your professional or personal life.
  • Intervention: Participants will be able to understand better why people with autism may behave differently, and will gain practical knowledge of strategies to enable them be more effective in working with people with autism.

This course will look at a comparison of the development and understanding of communication between individuals with autism and those without. Communication and Autism explores a range of communication difficulties and differences associated with autism, including problems with using and understanding both verbal and non-verbal language. The course also covers considerations for building a foundation to improve communication with and for individuals with autism and recommendations of strategies and tools that can be used to support and maintain the development and utility of communication.


Course aims:

The aims of this course are to understand the different forms of communication used day by day. We will identify the indicators of typical development of communication. The course also aims to explore the nature of communication difficulties and differences associated with autism and provides strategies and examples of tools used to help staff facilitate and improve communication with individuals on the autism spectrum.

This course includes an introduction to the significance of sensory issues in context of autism spectrum disorders. It will look at definitions of concepts and terminology including sensory processing, sensory modulation, sensory overload and hyper-and hyposensitivity. There will be an overview of sensory sensitivities encountered in people with autism and how sensitivities are experienced or manifest themselves differently within each individual.

The aims of this course are to develop an understanding of how the senses function and to develop an awareness of our own sensory profile. The course aims to explore a wide range of sensory difficulties and differences associated with autism and their impact on the individual and will get participants to consider ways of minimising the impact of these sensory issues and creating more autism-friendly environments.

The course will cover how to understand the causes of stress and anxiety in autism and the importance of structure, routine and predictability for individuals with autism and the practical applications of these concepts. It will also highlight coping strategies to help individuals with autism to minimise the impact of anxiety and stress.


Course aims:

The aims of this course are to understand what constitutes as stress and anxiety and how they manifest themselves, how to identify the triggers and causes of stress and anxiety for individuals with autism and the impact on their behaviours. The course also explores coping strategies which minimise the impact of anxiety and stress.

  • Gain an understanding of the causes and triggers for anxiety and stress in the context of our own lives and for people with autism
  • Understand the importance of the daily application of structure, routine and predictability for people with autism
  • Learn how to prevent or reduce anxiety and stress

Training for Parents

Autism West Midlands run an autism awareness one day seminar for parents and people with autism to book onto. We try to keep prices as low as possible for people with autism, parents and unpaid carers. Professionals can also book onto this one day seminar. 

Autism Awareness One Day Seminar - Course Summary

This course will teach you about the historical and current understanding of autism, assessment checklists and the impact of having a diagnosis and effective strategies for caring, supporting and working with individuals with autism. You will hear a personal account of how autism affects the individual and how we can and should transfer knowledge and understanding into practice when working with individuals with autism.

Course benefits

You will gain knowledge and understanding of the four key areas of impact that autism has on individuals and understanding of why people with autism may behave differently. You will be more able to empathise with the challenges faced by people with autism in order to improve interaction with them at work, at school or at home and will be equipped with knowledge and basic strategies in order to effectively care for, support or work with people with autism.
