Family events

Autism West Midlands offer a range of events from support groups to play sessions.

I have been attending the Dad’s group for over a year now and cannot praise the support I receive from the guys enough. The first time I attended was very emotional, having not received any support or spoken to anyone up until then, and it felt like I had opened a tap. The dad’s were all very supportive, non-judgemental and ready to listen and share advice. The support I feel I have received over my time attending has been invaluable and got me through many dark moments. My son has a diagnosis of high-functioning autism and at times his behaviour has been challenging and very physical. The speakers and dads who attend have been happy to share coping strategies and experience and as a result I feel more confident as a parent. I can not thank the staff of Autism West Midlands and the dads enough and value they’re advice and friendship beyond words.

Support Groups

Support groups or coffee mornings take place regularly across the West Midlands region and are accessible to all parents, whether or not their child has a diagnosis of autism and wherever they live in the West Midlands. The groups are a great opportunity to meet others, share experiences and get informal advice from Autism West Midlands staff and other parents. All our support groups are listed on the events page of our website.

We are unable to offer advice sessions in all areas of the West Midlands due to funding constraints.

Events for the whole family

A range of events for the whole family – mums, dads and siblings too – are run throughout the year in Birmingham & the Black Country, Solihull & Shropshire. Most of our family events can be attended by families who live anywhere in the West Midlands but please check the listing when booking. Staff are on hand to support but children remain the responsibility of their parents at our family events.

The type of events we run include

  • Stay and play sessions for younger children
  • Lego play sessions
  • Art and Craft
  • Relaxation sessions
  • Trips to the seaside and local attractions

Autism West Midlands works in partnership with local authorities, local NHS, voluntary organisations and charitable trusts and is grateful for the support of The Edward Gostling Foundation (Formally the ACT Foundation), Action For Children, Sandwell Council, SOLAR (Solihull), Shropshire Council.
