Laura and Sam

Laura and Sam are parents to Lewis who is 6 years old.

Lewis was diagnosed with autism about 6 months ago. Both Laura and Sam have reached out to Autism West Midlands to ask for help.

Laura and Sam found it very challenging as parents and have told us they felt that the diagnosis had filled them with feelings of worry about their and Lewis’s futures.

Lewis has been having difficulty in attending school with reports that he has been “disruptive”. Laura and Sam were invited to meet with a member of our Family Team, who is also a parent of an autistic child. Laura and Sam were able to offload and explain how they felt and asked for some guidance around how they might best parent Lewis. Laura and Sam were provided with information, advice and guidance as well as reassurance.

Both were able to attend a parent carer group near where they lived as well as being given factsheets about autism. Laura told us;

”We have been able to meet other parents who have had similar experiences to us. We talked about how we felt as parents and have learnt that with understanding and some adjustments Lewis can thrive at home and at school”.
