Carry on Camping at Oakfield!

At Autism West Midlands we strive to make the wishes and requests of everyone we support become a reality.

Last year, Robbie* who lives in one of our services, said that he wanted to camp in the garden at Oakfield House. Unfortunately, the wet and windy weather meant it wasn’t to be.

With the recent lovely sunny Spring weather 2025 has sent our way the staff decided it was time to dust off the sleeping bags, blow up the airbeds and get the tents out and on May 29th the camping adventure finally began!

On Thursday evenings we have a Drama Therapist who visits Oakfield House residents so Robbie* and others from the drama group had a special session in the garden around a virtual campfire made by one of our talented Support Workers Chris. There was then a storytelling session and everyone collected wood from the garden for a special campfire sing-song. Everyone enjoyed a feast of hot dogs and popcorn and a late night walk. After this it was back to the tents with the torches off so Robbie* and staff Anthony and Eve could get some shut eye.

Despite the sunny weather in the daytime it was a very cold night and so everyone was up bright and early at 6am for breakfast in the garden. Robbie* had an excellent time!

Although they didn’t go far it was a real adventure and we hope to do it again soon.

A huge thanks to all the staff at Oakfield for the effort and dedication put in to making the camping a reality.
